ARTIST RESIDENCY
Creative friends, a peaceful workspace—perfect ingredients for making great memories.
I discovered Madeira by chance, on a friend’s recommendation. A change of scenery, to break free from a downward spiral at a time when nothing was going right. What was meant to be a simple break turned into an obvious choice: I moved to this island nearly two years ago. This decision was not made lightly. After 20 years in Paris, with its exhausting pace and relentless financial pressures, I had reached my limits.
Here, isolation is not a constraint but an opportunity. Living on an island means confronting yourself, facing the silence and the passage of time. When well-managed, boredom sparks creativity. I’m convinced of it. The idea of transforming this place into an artistic residency came naturally. I wanted to give this space an additional purpose beyond simply living here. This project allows me to host other artists, share experiences, and work together—or alone—depending on each person’s preferences.
With this in mind, I took the opportunity to ask a few questions to those who have passed through Blase House. The profiles are diverse: a powerful young lady specializing in mural decor, a ceramicist-designer living between Zurich and Nagoya, a Parisian comic book artist who thrives in erotic illustration—but not only that—and a talented, promising young painter living here in Madeira.
More voices, more journeys, and more perspectives will continue to enrich this gallery and bring the place to life.
Happy reading!
